Malcolm (Mike) Richard Hartman, a true renaissance man, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2024 following a surgery necessitated by cancer. Mike had battled prostate cancer in the past, and had recently been diagnosed with neuroendocrine carcinoma.
Malcolm Richard Hartman was the second child and first son of Nancy Jeffris Hartman and Richard (Dick) Stair Hartman. He was born in 1944 in Janesville, WI. After graduation from Beloit College in 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and had the good fortune of being stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he lived briefly in Cleveland, OH before settling in Atlanta, GA, where he lived for over 50 years. In Atlanta, he received a Master’s Degree from Georgia State, and established a long career working with employee stock ownership plans and business evaluations.
Mike was an All-American cross-country runner for Beloit College, and he continued running through much of his adult life. At age 36, he ran the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D. C. with a time of 2 hours and 36 minutes, just 25 minutes behind the winner of the race. He met many of his life-long friends through running groups and the Atlanta Track Club. He also loved playing golf and enjoyed many friendships through the Senior Men’s Golf Association at Ansley Golf Club, where he was a member for over 25 years.
He had a love of art that was instilled in him at an early age. His mother was a gifted painter and taught him to value museums and all types of art. He played banjo, loved music and theater, and devoured books. He filled his home with art that was made by people he loved as well as by people he met on his adventures.
Mike delighted in traveling and took every opportunity to visit new places and have new experiences. He traveled extensively in Europe and Africa, making a point to see famous sites as well as share his gifts with others in service. He had a heart for giving back, and spent many years actively volunteering for and supporting organizations that help with homelessness and hunger.
Mike was surrounded by women for most of his life. He is the father of four daughters and was married three times. He was delighted when his first grandchild was a boy, but we secretly believe that he absolutely adored the women in his life, and that at the end of his time here, he held up his family as the thing he was most proud of.
Mike is survived by his wife of 18 years, Susan Dohrmann Hartman, his first wife, Mary Schroer, his second wife, Ellen Weaver Hartman, his sister Nancy Weiner Grossman, and his brother Landis Hartman. He is also survived by his four daughters, Monica LaVold (Timothy), Emily Rutherford (William), Sarah Stennett (Kellen), and Anna Tipton (Andy) and by his three step children, Christine Dohrmann Priddy (Sean), Betsy Dohrmann Marotta (Jim), and David Dohrmann (Chrissy). He was blessed with a legacy of 14 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, his mother, his nephew Dieter Weiner, his brothers-in-law Stanley Grossman, and Ronald Weiner.
